A trip to Nepal

Nepal

At the end of January my colleague James and I were invited to visit one of our Learning for Life partners COSAN (Community Support Association of Nepal) in Nepal. The purpose of the visit was to accompany LFL’s programme director on his regularly scheduled field trip to monitor our partners in the field.  As the founder of dAnu and a trustee for Learning for life I had always wanted to visit our projects, so I was delighted with the invitation.

Curry’s ability to fight cancer put to the test

Posted by: on May 8, 2012 | No Comments

A BBC report on the 6th of May 2012 discusses the possibilities that “a chemical found in curry is to be tested for it’s ability to kill bowel cancer tumours in patients”.  The ingredient is curcumin, which is found in the spice turmeric-long known for it’s amazing health benefits.

At Maison dAnu we have long been convinced of the healing properties of turmeric.  This is the reason we added it to our list of potent anti-inflammatories in our “Vital Synergy Day Cream”.  Turmeric’s natural antioxidant properties are so effective as an anti-inflammatory that a topical preparation such as ours can also reduce localized inflammation associated with rosacea, eczema and psoriasis.

In addition, to these chronic skin conditions the visible signs of  skin aging (extrinsic), such as fine lines, wrinkles, fragility and laxity are due to solar elastosis, collagen destruction and tissue atrophy.  This is why our “Arvore da Vida” anti-aging range was developed-to “Defend Against Nature’s Undoing”  Our anti-aging strategy is based on the prevention and reversal of chronic inflammation.  We believe that this strategy has the ability to not only redress chronic inflammation but in doing so has the ability to restore and prevent visible aging of the skin.  In addition to using powerful natural anti-inflammatories we further aid the repair and regeneration of healthy tissue by creating products that keep the skins protective barrier intact.  At Maison dAnu we believe in an inside-out approach to beauty, so eating foods that contain high levels of anti-oxidants and anti-inflamatories will protect against disease on the inside and out!

London Loves-Marcus Waring at the Berkeley

Posted by: on Mar 15, 2012 | No Comments

While I admit I am not a “foodie” by any stretch of the imagination.  I still enjoy a beautiful meal in a relaxed sumptuous setting.  Generally, my non-meat eating ways limit me to a select few choices of places to dine.  However, this time I was pleasantly surprised!  I recently dined at the “Marcus Waring” restaurant at the fabulous Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge in London and I was truly surprised buy my experience.

Red Meat Linked to Increased Risk of Mortality

Posted by: on Mar 14, 2012 | No Comments

Unless you’ve been living on the moon you’ll have undoubtedly read or seen news coverage regarding some pretty damning scientific research that links processed and red meat consumption with alarmingly significant incidents of  cancer, heart disease and  diabetes.  Research scientists at the prestigious Harvard School of Public Health based their findings on data obtained from a study of more  110,000 subjects and the findings were as follows:

Subjects consuming as little as two pieces of bacon or one hot dog per day increased their mortality rate by 20% over a 20-year period.

Subjects consuming a small, three-ounce serving of red meat per day (a palm sized portion) increased their mortality by 13%.

The proverbial “light at the end of the tunnel”?  The researchers did find that by substituting the meat with poultry or vegetarian protein options made a major difference in these results:

Substituting a serving of nuts instead of red meat  was associated with a  19% lower risk of mortality.

Substituting Poultry instead of  red meat was  associated with a 14% lower risk of mortality.

The overall finding of the study suggest that total avoidance of processed meat is prudent in addition to limiting your intake of unprocessed red meat to 2-3 portions per week.

If this is all starting to sound like “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure” then that because it is!  The reality is that diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes are difficult to treat and all too often impossible to cure.  However, prevention is too often underplayed, yet it is the only thing  we really have in our control.

I guess I’m  rather fortunate in this debate as I never liked meat.  I was a vegetarian for several years and now favour a diet that includes fish (salmon/tuna) and vegetable protein.  However, I also think that people need to be careful when adopting a meat free diet.  You can’t be a healthy vegetarian just because you removed the meat!  Being a healthy vegetarian is a lot more disciplined than that.  All food needs to be fresh and unprocessed.  Meat substitutes can and often are highly processed and off little or no nutritional value.

In modern Britain we have become inundated with all things diet and weight related!  Turn on the  T.V and be “entertained” by obese people who’ve eaten themselves in to a state of immobilisation and need the side of their house removed to get out?  Pick up a magazine and behold the plethora of  inflate-deflate  celebs.  Spend  Saturday’s searching channels for the most scrumptious concoctions cooked in the most scintillating sauces.  Food in all it’s aspects, cooking, eating, fattening, slimming has become a source of entertainment!  The healthful benefits have been mostly lost.
